False negative home pregnancy test?

i was supposed to get my period on the 7th but i never got it. i've been having some of the symptoms of pregnancy so i thought i should take a test, i took it the 13th about a week after i was supposed to get my period, it came out negative. part of me really didn't feel like i should trust it. it was the Walgreen's brand and i read the reviews and most people said that it gave them a negative result when they actually were pregnant. i've been on the pill for about 2 1/2 months, could that be why i missed my period? i'm really worried and i don't want to put my boyfriend through taking a test again it stressed him out too much last time, so if i don't get my period next month i am going to go to the dr. i just don't like waiting and am wondering if i have anything to worry about?
